Why We Love This Chocolate Smoothie for Weight Loss

We love smoothies at our house, and I’ve been on a diet for a while, losing over 30 lbs since the beginning of the year. (See more about my journey here) Really the major thing that has kept me on track has been smoothies!

I have a huge sweet tooth and smoothies really help me keep my sugar cravings at bay. This recipe is smooth, sweet and chocolatey. It really helps, and my kids think it’s delicious, too! They love it as much as I do, even though they aren’t losing weight. (It’s super healthy and I add a ton of greens to theirs).

Ingredients in Our Chocolate Weight Loss Smoothie

Banana

Bananas are great sources of fiber, potassium and vitamins. They can help you regulate blood sugar levels, which is important for weight loss.

They’re also a good source of energy, which helps if you’re working out or trying to lose weight.

I like to use a frozen banana for added creaminess, but if you have a fresh ripe banana it is okay to use that, too.

Spinach

Spinach is high in nutrients and low in calories, making it a great food for weight loss. It’s a good source of fiber, which helps fill you up and keeps you feeling fuller longer.

It’s also rich in vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium and vitamins A and C.

Spinach is a great addition to smoothies because it doesn’t have a strong taste and it hides completely in a chocolate smoothie. If you’re new to adding greens to smoothies start with just a few leaves and work your way up.

Chocolate Protein Powder

I use a chocolate protein powder in this recipe, but you can really use any flavor that you like. I like the taste of chocolate with banana, but feel free to experiment!

Protein is essential for weight loss because it helps fill you up and keeps you feeling fuller longer. It also helps build and repair muscle tissue, which is important if you’re working out.

I like to use a plant-based protein powder, but you can use whey protein powder if you prefer.

Cinnamon

Organic Raw Brown Cinnamon on a Dark Background

Cinnamon is a great spice to add to smoothies because it has many health benefits. It helps regulate blood sugar levels and has been shown to help with weight loss.

It’s also a good source of antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

I like to add a little bit of cinnamon to my smoothies because it gives them a little extra flavor. If you don’t like cinnamon, feel free to leave it out.

Unsweetened Almond Milk

I like to use Simply Almond unsweetened almond milk because it’s one of the lowest in calories and points (I’m doing Weight Watchers) so it makes sense for a weight loss smoothie. Plus it really tastes great in smoothies!

You can use any type of milk that you like in this recipe, but I would recommend using a lower calorie, nonfat or low fat milk to keep the calories, fat and sugar content down.

How to Make Our Chocolate Banana Smoothie

This chocolate weight loss smoothie is quick and easy to make! Simply add all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.

If you’re using a fresh banana, you may need to add a little bit of ice to get the desired consistency. If you’re using a frozen banana, you shouldn’t need to add anything.

I like to blend my smoothies until they’re completely smooth, but if you prefer a little bit of texture, you can blend them for less time.

This smoothie is best enjoyed right away, but if you need to make it ahead of time, you can store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just be sure to give it a good shake or stir before drinking.

I like to top it with some fresh bananas and a few mini chocolate chips (we use dairy free chocolate chips, too!) like you see in the picture.

How to Customize This Healthy Chocolate Banana Smoothie Recipe

One of the best things about smoothies is how easy they are to customize. Here are some ways you can mix things up:

Add in superfoods: Throw in blueberries (they go great with chocolate), supergreens powder (you can find chocolate flavors, too), or any other superfood you want.

Make it a chocolate peanut butter smoothie: Simply add in some natural peanut butter (or another seed or nut butter) to the recipe. Almond butter works well, too, and the healthy fat can help keep you feeling full longer.

Skip the banana: If you want to cut out some of the sugar, you can leave out the banana and add in a little extra spinach. The smoothie will be less sweet without the banana, but you could add a touch of natural sweetener.

Use a different protein powder: If you don’t like chocolate protein powder or can’t have it because of dietary restrictions, feel free to use vanilla, strawberry or any other flavor that you like. You could even use unflavored protein powder and add in your own flavors. If you still want it chocolate, just add unsweetened cocoa powder or cacao powder. Or skip the protein powder and use Greek yogurt instead.

Change up the milk: Use any type of milk that you like in this recipe. I’ve made it with almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk and regular cow’s milk and they’ve all been delicious.

Make it a smoothie bowl: Want a more traditional breakfast? Simply reduce the amount of liquid in this recipe and turn it into a smoothie bowl! Then you get to add toppings such as fresh fruit, chocolate chips (use sparingly for weight loss or get some sweetened with stevia), chia seeds, hemp seeds, or even steel cut oats!
