Why We Love This Easy Grapefruit Smoothie for Weight Loss

Smoothies are a great way to lose weight because they don’t take long to prepare, taste great and can be excellent replacements for high sugar, high fat or high calorie meals or snacks, and this grapefruit smoothie doesn’t disappoint.

It is made with whole, unprocessed ingredients and is gluten free, dairy free and has no added sugar. We make a lot of smoothies in our house and my kids that adore grapefruit are huge fans of this one.

Ingredients in Our Easy Grapefruit Smoothie Recipe

Grapefruit

Ripe grapefruit with juice on table close-up

Grapefruit has long been known for its weight loss benefits and it’s also a great source of nutrients such as vitamin C. In fact, researchers have found that “the simple act of adding grapefruit and grapefruit juice to one’s diet can result in weight loss”, according to Medical News Today.

We buy whole pink grapefruit at the store and peel it for our smoothies. Make sure you get the white pith off the fresh grapefruit segments because it can be bitter.

Banana

Banana provides a creamy texture and natural sweetness to this smoothie, making it a perfect balance to the tart grapefruit. It also adds some much needed potassium and fiber to the mix.

For this smoothie I use frozen banana, because this adds a creaminess and thickness to the smoothie that a fresh banana lacks.

Ginger

Ginger is known for its ability to help calm the digestive system and stimulate metabolism. It’s a great choice if you like it’s unique flavor.

For best results use fresh ginger root instead of powdered, and if you don’t like the taste of ginger feel free to leave it out.

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is one of our favorite non-dairy milks for smoothies because it’s so creamy and delicious. It’s also a great source of healthy fats that have been shown to boost metabolism and promote weight loss.

Honey

Fresh honey with honeycomb, lemons, oranges, cinnamon, vanilla, anise star

I like to add a touch of honey to this smoothie, but you can totally leave it out if you want to keep it sugar free. Honey is a natural sweetener with health benefits, including being an antimicrobial, helping with coughs and promoting gut health.

How to Customize This Easy Grapefruit Weight Loss Smoothie

Make it green: Add a handful of fresh spinach or kale to this smoothie for an extra nutrient boost. Greens are perfect for weight loss as they are low calorie and packed with nutrients. I’d recommend spinach for this smoothie as it tends to hide the best. A grapefruit green smoothie is wonderful!

Change out the liquid: You can use coconut water, almond milk, dairy milk or just plain water instead of the coconut milk. Any type of milk will work. Green tea is another great option.

Make it sweeter: If you find this smoothie too tart for your liking, add a touch more honey, add maple syrup or even a pitted date. You could also add a splash of 100% orange juice or another citrus juice.

Change the fruit: Don’t like banana or grapefruit slices? No problem! While you won’t get the benefits of grapefruit if you choose to substitute, you could use orange, other citrus fruit or frozen pineapple in its place.

Make it creamier: If you want an even creamier smoothie, add in some avocado or full-fat yogurt. These ingredients will also add some healthy fats and protein to your smoothie.

Add protein: To make this smoothie a complete meal or snack, add in some protein powder or Greek yogurt. Protein helps keep you fuller longer and can help with weight loss.

Make it a smoothie bowl: Reduce the amount of liquid in this recipe and enjoy it as a thick and creamy smoothie bowl. Top with your favorite fresh or frozen fruit, nuts, chia seeds, hemp seeds or granola.

They are also a great way to sneak in more servings of fruits and vegetables than you would otherwise normally eat.

Can I add protein powder to this smoothie?

Yes, you can add protein powder to this smoothie to make it a complete meal or snack. Protein helps keep you fuller longer and can help with weight loss.
