Why We Love This Green Tea Smoothie for Weight Loss

Green tea is amazing for you. It it loaded with antioxidants, has been shown to increase fat burning (in fact, you’ll find green tea extract in many fat burning supplements!).

It also helps to regulate blood sugar levels, which is important for preventing cravings.

And this green tea smoothie also contains other weight loss-friendly ingredients like pineapple, mango and banana.

Pineapple and banana are high in fiber and water, both of which help to fill you up and keep you hydrated. They are also low calorie.

I’m the only one in my house who is trying to lose weight, but all of us love the taste of this delicious smoothie. Even the kiddos!

Ingredients in Our Easy Green Tea Smoothie Recipe

Pineapple

I love using pineapple in smoothies. It’s a super sweet fruit and gives a tropical flavor to this easy smoothie.

Plus, pineapple is a great source of bromelain, fiber and vitamin C.

You can use fresh, frozen or canned pineapple in this recipe, but my preference is frozen pineapple because it gives the smoothie a great consistency.

Mango

Mango is another sweet fruit that goes great in a smoothie. It’s actually my favorite fruit, so you will see it in lots of recipes here!

It’s also a good source of fiber, vitamins A and C.

You can use fresh or frozen mango in this recipe, but again, we use frozen most all of the time for texture and convenience. As much as I love fresh mango, I hate to cut them, and pre-cut mango slices can get expensive.

Banana

Banana is a must in most any smoothie! Almost every smoothie on our site has banana, because it’s amazing for sweetness and texture.

Not only does it make the smoothie creamy, but it also add sweetness and potassium, fiber and water soluble vitamins.

Fresh or frozen banana can be used, but if you are going to use any frozen fruit, I’d recommend banana because of the texture it gives the smoothie when frozen. We buy reduced bananas when they are on sale and freeze them just for smoothies!

Green Tea

And of course, you’ll need some green tea for this recipe. I recommend using brewed green tea that has been cooled for this recipe. This can be done ahead of time and stored in the fridge until ready to use.

You can use green tea bags or loose leaf green tea, but make sure it is brewed and cooled before adding it to the smoothie. Green tea is famous for its health benefits and weight loss effects.

In fact, when green tea is added you could call this a fat burning smoothie!

Honey

And finally, a little bit of honey for sweetness. You can use more or less, depending on how sweet you like your smoothies and how ripe/sweet your fruit is.

This is optional, because this smoothie already has three very sweet fruits. If you’re unsure, leave it out and blend. Then taste and add the honey if you feel it needs it and blend again.

How to Make This Green Tea Smoothie for Weight Loss

One of the best things about smoothies is how easy they are to make! You just throw all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.

If you find your smoothie is too thick, add more liquid until it reaches the desired consistency. And if it’s too thin, add more fruit or ice cubes and blend again.

Here’s a quick rundown of how to make this green tea smoothie:

1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

2. If too thick, add more liquid and blend again.

3. If too thin, add more fruit or ice cubes and blend again.

4. Enjoy!

Tips for Making the Best Green Tea Smoothie

Make sure your green tea is brewed and cooled before adding it to the smoothie.

You can use fresh, frozen or canned pineapple, mango and banana in this recipe. We prefer frozen for texture and convenience.

To make this smoothie vegan, use agave nectar or another plant-based sweetener in place of the honey.

If you don’t have green tea on hand, you can use matcha powder instead and make it a matcha green tea smoothie. Just add 1-2 teaspoons of the matcha tea powder to the smoothie and blend until combined for a delicious matcha smoothie.

Leftover smoothie can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just give it a good shake or stir before drinking.

How to Customize This Easy Smoothie Recipe

Add greens for a green smoothie: This is my favorite customization! Throw in a small handful of fresh spinach, kale or other leafy greens. Frozen greens are also great for green smoothies.

Change up the liquid: Use almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk, coconut water or even just water or pineapple juice in place of the green tea. We also sometimes switch up our regular green tea for the tea bags that have elderberry, peach or other flavors.

Make it a breakfast smoothie: Add 1/2 cup rolled oats or a scoop of protein powder or nut butter (almond butter or peanut butter are both great) to make this smoothie more filling and satisfying. The nut butter also is a good way to add healthy fat if you want that in your diet.

Add protein: A scoop of protein powder is an easy way to add protein to any smoothie. Just make sure to add a little extra liquid if you do this. You can also use Greek yogurt.

Change up the fruit: Don’t have one of the ingredients listed? Use what you have on hand! A peach green tea smoothie is one of my favorite substitutions.

Make it a smoothie bowl: Reduce the amount of liquid in your recipe, pour your smoothie into a bowl and top with your favorite toppings. We love granola, fresh fruit, nut butter or coconut flakes.

Add superfoods: Chia seeds, flaxseed meal, spirulina powder or hemp hearts are all great additions to smoothies. Just start with a small amount and add more to taste.
