Somtimes most of us struggle with getting things moving. Maybe it’s a few poor diet choices, lack of exercise or both, but for whatever the reason, many in the world struggle with constipation and bloating.
So today we are going to show you a delicious and easy way to help cleanse your colon using a few simple ingredients that are fresh, unprocessed and delicious.
This smoothie is perfect for helping to get things moving. So why not give it a try today?
Why We Love This Colon Cleansing Smoothie Recipe
In my family, I’m the one who struggles with constipation and bloating the most, followed by one of my boys. We developed this recipe to help get the colon moving and do a colon cleanse.
Typically we will drink this first thing in the morning after a cup of warm lemon water to get things “jump started”. Sometimes it takes a few days in a row of this for it to work for me, but it usually always helps.
Ingredients in Our Colon Cleanse Smoothie Recipe
Pineapple or Banana
Pineapple is a great choice for a colon cleansing smoothie because it acts as a natural sweetener and is considered one of nature’s best colon cleansing fruits. (source)
You can use fresh, frozen or canned pineapple in this recipe, but I would only use canned if I didn’t have anything else and wanted to make it without going to the store. Fresh is the best for colon cleansing, but frozen gives a great texture to the smoothie and is a good choice if you don’t like cutting up pineapples (I hear ya there!).
Use banana if you have those on hand instead of pineapple.

Celery
Celery is a wonderfully fibrous vegetable that helps to “brush” out the nastiness in the colon. It can also help with bloating and is super low in calories, making it perfect for this smoothie recipe. (source)
Use fresh celery, cut up into smaller pieces if you don’t have a high powered blender. Even if you don’t like the taste of celery (like me), try it in this smoothie and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Lemon
Lemons are rich in Vitamin C and help to cleanse the digestive system. Adding lemon to this smoothie recipe will also help give it a delicious flavor. Lemon water has long been used as a “master cleanse” (source) and we are going to add a couple of segments of whole lemons (make sure seeds are removed!).
Buy whole lemons at the grocery store, organic if you can, but any fresh lemon is fine.

Kale or Spinach
Kale is a leafy green vegetable that is well known for its health benefits. It contains chlorophyll, which helps remove bacteria from the colon and heal the mucuous lining of the GI tract. Plus it’s high in fiber! (source)
Grab you some kale in the produce department of your grocery store. You can buy large leafy kale in bunches or you can get a container of baby kale near the salad. Spinach works well, too, if you don’t like kale (and it hides great in smoothies).

Mint Leaves
Mint leaves are an excellent choice for a colon cleansing smoothie because they help to relax the stomach muscles and help with bloating. They also aid in digestion and help to remove toxins from the body. (source)
You can buy a small container of mint leaves at your grocery store near the herbs or you can grow your own mint plant, which is very easy to do since mint will take over anywhere (so plant it in a container or it will spread!).

Coconut Water
Coconut water is one of my favorite liquids to add to smoothies. Coconut water aids in digestion and helps to cleanse the colon because it soothes the colon and can help with constipation. It can also help flush out excess water and help with bloating. (source)
Try to get coconut water that’s processed as little as possible. I like Harmless Harvest but any coconut water can do. Green tea also works well if you don’t like coconut water.

Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are wonderful little nutritional powerhouses, and they form a kind of “gel” on the outside of them, which is wonderful for cleaning out the colon. They also contain soluble fiber which is known for helping with constipation. (source)
You can buy chia seeds in any grocery store nowadays. It used to be reserved for the “natural” section, and that is still where you may find it in your store.

How to Blend Our Easy Colon Cleansing Smoothie
Blend all ingredients in a blender until desired consistency is reached. I like my smoothies on the thinner side, so I add more liquid (coconut water or green tea) if needed. If you want yours thicker, add less liquid or add some ice cubes.
If you don’t have a high powered blender (like a Vitamix), you may want to cut up the pineapple and celery into smaller pieces so your blender doesn’t have to work as hard.
Drink this smoothie once a day first thing in the morning for best results. You can store a bit in the fridge but it’s best if you drink it fresh, otherwise consume whatever you refrigerate within 24 hours.

How to Customize This Healthy Smoothie Recipe
Add ginger or turmeric: Ginger is a great addition to this smoothie if you’re looking to give it a little boost. Ginger aids in digestion and can help to relieve stomach pain. Turmeric also works well for colon cleansing. For best results use fresh ginger or turmeric instead of ground. (source)
Use frozen fruits and vegetables: I mentioned above that you can use frozen pineapple, celery, and kale if you’d like. This will make the smoothie colder and thicker. If you use frozen fruits and vegetables, you may want to add less liquid or no ice cubes.
Make it a detox smoothie: To make this more of a detox smoothie, add some spirulina powder or chlorella powder. These are both green superfood powders that help to remove toxins from the body and have tons of other health benefits.
Add honey: Honey is a great sweetener for smoothies and it has some health benefits as well. Honey can help with digestion and it’s also an antibacterial.
Change the liquid: Don’t like coconut water? No problem! You can use green tea, apple juice, orange juice or pineapple juice. Even plain water works in a pinch. If you want it creamier, you can try coconut milk or almond milk, but I don’t feel like these have the same natural colon cleanse effect.
I would not recommend adding protein powder to a colon cleansing smoothie, since a lot of protein powders tend to have the opposite effect on people.
Common Questions about Colon Cleansing Smoothies
There are a few different options when it comes to cleansing your colon. You can take supplements, drink lemon honey water, or drink a colon cleanse smoothie. I like drinking a smoothie because it’s an easy and delicious way to cleanse your colon and get all the nutrients your body needs and it has a ton of fiber and other nutrients.
I recommend drinking a colon cleanse smoothie once a day for best results. You can drink it more often if you’d like, but make sure you are drinking a lot of water if you do this since too much fiber can backfire on you (especially if your body isn’t used to getting much fiber) and you need the water to flush it out.

The amount of fiber you need for a colon cleanse smoothie depends on how much you normally eat. If you’re used to eating a lot of fiber, you can add more to your smoothie.
If you’re not used to eating much fiber, start with a smaller amount and work your way up. Too much fiber can cause gas and bloating, so it’s important to start slow. If you need more fiber in your smoothie, add psyllium husk powder.
