Why We Love This Sour Apple Smoothie

Sour apple is one of my favorite candy flavors, and while you can’t recreate that artificial apple flavor in a smoothie, you can make a really delicious drink with green apples.

We love trying new smoothies and are always dreaming up new recipes. My kids are huge fans of granny smith apples so we decided to use them in this smoothie recipe to create a sour green apple smoothie!

Ingredeints in Our Sour Apple Smoothie Recipe

Green Apples

Also known as granny smith apples, green apples have less sugar than their red or yellow counterparts. However, they are still great sources of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

For a “sour” apple taste, use granny smith apples, but if you have other apples (yellow or red apples) on hand they are okay to use, too, just note that the smoothie will be sweeter.

Spinach

Spinach is a leafy green vegetable that is high in folate as well as vitamins A, C, and K. It’s also a good source of iron and calcium. It works wonderfully in smoothies because it’s flavor is easily hidden by other flavors in a smoothie, but you still get all the nutrients.

You can use fresh or frozen spinach in this smoothie.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice adds a tartness to this smoothie that balances out the sweetness of the apples and banana. It also adds vitamin C to the smoothie.

You can use fresh or bottled lemon juice in this recipe, but most of the vitamin C is destroyed when heated, so fresh is best if possible. Lime juice will also work for this recipe.

Banana

Bananas are a great addition to smoothies because they add natural sweetness and creaminess. Bananas are also a good source of dietary fiber, potassium, and vitamins C and B6.

Use a frozen banana for best texture, but you can leave this out if you prefer a more “sour” smoothie.

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk adds a delicious creamy texture to this smoothie. You can use full-fat or light coconut milk, but we prefer the taste and texture of full-fat coconut milk.

You can substitute any milk you like such as almond milk, soy milk, oat milk or even water, coconut water or apple juice.

How to Make A Sour Apple Smoothie

This sour apple smoothie is so easy to make! Simply add all ingredients into a blender and blend on high speed until smooth. If you find that the smoothie is too thick, add a little more coconut milk until it reaches the desired consistency.

We like our smoothies on the tart side, but if you prefer yours to be sweeter, add a little honey or agave nectar to taste.

How to Customize This Healthy Smoothie Recipe

Add protein: To make this smoothie a complete meal, add a scoop of protein powder or 1/2 cup cottage cheese or Greek yogurt.

Make it sweeter: As mentioned above, if you prefer your smoothies to be sweeter you can add honey, maple syrup or agave nectar to taste. You can also add sweet fruit such as pineapple or mango or even dates.

Add more greens: If you love green smoothies, feel free to add an extra handful of spinach, swiss chard or kale. You could even throw in a scoop of super greens powder.

Make it a smoothie bowl: For a thick and creamy smoothie bowl, simply reduce the amount of coconut milk called for in the recipe. Top with your favorite toppings such as granola, nuts, or fresh fruit. Sometimes for dessert we make this smoothie and add a drizzle of caramel sauce – yum!

Add healthy fat: For an added boost of healthy fats, add a tablespoon of chia seed, hemp seed or ground flax seed. You could also add 1/4 avocado or a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil or nut butter such as peanut butter or almond butter.

Add superfoods: To give this green smoothie recipe an extra nutrient boost, add a tablespoon of acai berry powder or spirulina powder. You could also add a handful of goji berries.
