Homemade chocolate smoothie with almond milk and cinnamon

Sometimes you just get a craving for something chocolate, but if you are watching what you eat, stuffing a chocolate bar into your face isn’t the best idea. So, what do you do?

The healthiest and easiest way for me to satisfy a chocolate craving is to whip up an incredibly easy chocolate smoothie, so today I’m here to tell you how to make a chocolate smoothie and share my go-to recipe when I’m in the mood for chocolate. It uses simple ingredients and is actually good for you!

Why We Love This Easy Chocolate Smoothie Recipe

When my boys are begging for ice cream and other treats, I like to make them this healthy smoothie instead, especially served double thick as a chocolate smoothie bowl for them. They really love it when I sprinkle on some chocolate chips! They love this for breakfast or for an after school snack.

For me, when I want something chocolate, I love this smoothie because it’s so simple to make and tastes amazing. I blend one up and guzzle it down, not even bothering to add chocolate chips or make a smoothie bowl, but you can do either by just adjusting the amount of liquid in the recipe. This is one of my all time favorite smoothies!

Ingredients in Our Easy Chocolate Smoothie

Banana

Bananas are perfect with chocolate and a frozen banana gives this smoothie an extra creamy texture plus a natural sweetener.

Bananas provide fiber, potassium and a host of other vitamins and minerals, making them an excellent addition to any smoothie recipe. You can use a fresh banana, but add some ice for texture if you go this route.

Berries

I typically add raspberries, blackberries or strawberries to my smoothies for an extra boost of antioxidants and vitamins. You can use frozen or fresh berries in this recipe.

If you want a chocolate strawberry smoothie, then I would go with fresh strawberries since they are so sweet and in season right now.

Chocolate Protein Powder, Cocoa Powder or Raw Cacao Powder

protein powder and scoop

This gives us the rich chocolate flavor we are craving! There are a ton of great tasting chocolate protein powders on the market (this is my favorite), but if you don’t want protein powder grab some cocoa powder or even raw cacao powder.

Cacao powder is less processed than cocoa powder and has a higher concentration of antioxidants, so it’s the healthier choice. However, it can be a bit more bitter, so if you are making this for kids or don’t like bitter chocolate, go with unsweetened cocoa powder instead, or opt for the protein powder for an extra protein boost.

Dates

Dates are my favorite natural sweetener and they help give this smoothie a lovely thick and creamy texture. If you don’t have dates, you could try honey or maple syrup, but the dates really are best.

You only need one or two for this recipe, depending on how sweet your banana is and how sweet you want your smoothie.

Add just a pinch of cinnamon to take the flavor in this smoothie over the top! Cinnamon is great for helping to reduce blood sugar and tastes amazing.

Milk

bottles of different non-dairy milk

I use almond milk in my smoothies, but you could use dairy milk, cashew milk , soy milk, coconut milk or any other type of non-dairy milk you like. I wouldn’t recommend using water because it will make the smoothie much thinner and won’t have the same creamy texture.

If you want a vegan chocolate smoothie, go with the non-dairy milk for sure! My non-dairy son also loves the Chobani extra creamy oat milk.

How to Make a Chocolate Smoothie that Tastes like a Healthy Chocolate Milkshake

Making this chocolate smoothie is so incredibly easy and only takes a few minutes. Simply add all of your ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.

If you want a really thick smoothie bowl, then use less liquid. If you want a thinner smoothie that you can drink with a straw, then add more liquid. It’s really that simple!

How to Customize This Easy Chocolate Smoothie Recipe

The great thing about smoothies is that you can easily customize them to your liking. If you want a chocolate peanut butter smoothie, then add 1 Tbsp of peanut butter or almond butter to the recipe.

You could also add a handful of spinach for a chocolate green smoothie. This is what I often do, as chocolate really does cover up the flavor of greens and also the chocolate covers up the “green” that turns people off when they see it.

If you want a lower calorie smoothie, then use water or unsweetened almond milk in place of the milk called for in the recipe. You could also leave out the dates or just use one date.

Finally, you can adjust the amount of liquid to make this smoothie as thick or thin as you like. If you want a thinner smoothie that’s easy to drink with a straw, then add more liquid. If you want a thicker smoothie bowl, then use less liquid.

You can also add ice cubes if you want an even thicker, creamier smoothie. Use a small handful of ice if you are using all fresh fruit.

For even more fiber and protein, add in chia seeds, hemp seeds or flax seeds. This is a great way to get in more nutrition without sacrificing taste.

Instructions:

1. Add all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Use a high speed blender for best results.

2. Add more liquid if you want a thinner smoothie or less liquid if you want a thicker smoothie bowl. Top with cacao nibs, mini chocolate chips or any other topping you like.

3. Enjoy immediately!

Tips for Making the Most Delicious Chocolate Smoothie

If you don’t have a high powered blender, then you may want to soak your dates in water for 10 minutes before adding them to the blender. This will help them blend up more easily.

Feel free to add 1 Tbsp of peanut butter or almond butter for a chocolate peanut butter smoothie.

Add a handful of spinach for a chocolate green smoothie.

If you want a lower calorie smoothie, then use water or unsweetened almond milk in place of the milk called for in the recipe. You could also leave out the dates or just use one date.
