A strawberry banana smoothie bowl is also an awesome way to get creative in the kitchen. You can customize your smoothie bowl with favorite toppings like granola, nuts, chia seeds, coconut flakes – or whatever else you’re craving.

In this article, I’m going to show you exactly how easy it is to make a creamy strawberry banana smoothie bowl that will satisfy any appetite!

Why We Love This Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl Recipe

Our family is big on smoothies and smoothie bowls, and we love trying different recipes all the time.  I have four little boys from ages 5-13 and they adore a sweet smoothie bowl.

We love this one because it’s super simple with only three ingredients, it is bursting with fruit flavor from the strawberries and bananas, and because it’s very healthy!

For one of my sons I have to substitute plant-based Greek yogurt (we have found a strawberry flavor that is thick like Greek yogurt) because he is allergic to dairy, but this recipe works really well as a vegan strawberry banana smoothie bowl this way, too!

Ingredients in Our Creamy Smoothie Bowl

Strawberry

Fresh ripe strawberries on wooden table

Strawberries are a great addition to smoothie bowls due to their bright, sweet flavor and nutritional benefits. One cup of strawberries contains a hefty amount of your recommended daily value of Vitamin C, an essential nutrient that acts as an antioxidant and boosts the immune system.

They are also low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber, which helps regulate digestion and promote feelings of fullness. With their delicious taste and health benefits, it’s easy to see why strawberries make such a perfect addition to any smoothie bowl.

You can use fresh or frozen strawberries in this recipe.  If you use frozen, you might have to add some liquid if your blender needs a little help.  With fresh berries you shouldn’t need to add more liquid.

Banana

Bananas are a great addition to smoothie bowls, as they add a thick and creamy texture. Plus, the sweetness of bananas is a great way to naturally sweeten your smoothie bowl without adding any added sugars.

Bananas are also full of healthy vitamins and minerals that can help promote good health. They’re packed with dietary fiber and manganese, which helps protect cells from damage and supports proper cognitive function. Bananas are also incredibly rich in potassium, which is essential for heart health; every single banana contains just under 450 milligrams of potassium!

Use fresh or frozen banana for this recipe.  I used fresh for this because it was what I had on hand, but if possible I love to use frozen bananas for my smoothies and smoothie bowls.  It gives a wonderful creaminess that is unmatched by any other frozen fruit (and even beats adding ice!).

If you use a frozen banana, you might have to add a little bit of liquid to help it blend.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt makes a great addition to smoothie bowls due to its thick, creamy texture and high protein content. Not only is it great for creating those Instagram worthy smoothie bowl recipes, but it also comes with plenty of health benefits.

Greek yogurt is full of probiotics, which help boost your immune system and improves digestion. It also contains calcium for strong bones and teeth, and B vitamins for energy production – making it a total winner for your smoothie bowl and health!

You can use plain or flavoried Greek yogurt for this recipe (we especially like vanilla) but watch out for added sugars, which many brands have.  As I mentioned above, you can also use a vegan Greek yogurt instead like we do for our son!

How to Blend a Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl

Blending this smoothie bowl couldn’t be easier!  Simply add the three ingredients to your blender and blend on high speed until smooth.

If you use fresh fruit (fresh strawberries and a fresh banana) then you shouldn’t have to add any other liquid, especially if you have a high-speed blender or even a food processor.  If your blender isn’t as powerful, it might need a bit of extra milk of choice to get going (we prefer plant-based milk such as oat milk, coconut milk or almond milk).  This is also true if you use all frozen fruit (especially with frozen strawberries).

If your smoothie bowl is too thin, try adding more frozen fruit or even ice cubes.  Chia seeds and oats are also great thickeners.

If your smoothie bowl is too thick, continue adding a bit of milk and blending again until you get the perfect smoothie bowl consistency for you.  (A smoothie bowl is thicker than a regular smoothie)

How to Customize This Easy Smoothie Bowl Made from Simple Ingredients

  • Add greens: To boost the nutritional value of your smoothie bowl, try adding some spinach or kale. The greens will add an extra dose of vitamins and minerals and won’t change the taste of your smoothie bowl.  You can also use greens powder.
  • Add protein with protein powder: To make your smoothie bowl more filling, try adding a scoop of protein powder. This will keep you full longer and help with muscle recovery after a workout.
  • Add nut butter: To add some healthy fats and flavor to your smoothie bowl, try adding a tablespoon of nut butter. Peanut butter, almond butter, and cashew butter are all great options, and if you can’t do nuts try a seed butter such as one made from sunflower seeds.
  • Add chia seeds: Chia seeds are a great source of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which can help to promote feelings of fullness and improve heart health.
  • Add Oats: Adding oats to your smoothie bowl will make it more filling and also adds a creamy texture. Oats are also a great source of dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals.
  • Add Flaxseed: Flaxseed adds a nutty flavor and is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber. It also helps in digestion and weight loss.
  • Add flavors: To add some extra flavor to your smoothie bowl, try adding a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon.
  • Add fruits: To change up the flavor of your smoothie bowl, try adding different fruits like blueberries, raspberries, or kiwi. This will add a new taste and a variety of vitamins and minerals.

Favorite Toppings for Smoothie Bowls

There are a variety of smoothie bowl toppings that we enjoy on our strawberry smoothie bowls.  Here are some of the best:

  • Fresh fruit: Fresh fruit is a great topping for smoothie bowls because it adds a burst of natural sweetness and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Berries, kiwi, and mango are some popular options.  We love banana slices and frozen strawberry slices.
  • Granola: Granola adds a nice crunch and a touch of sweetness to smoothie bowls. It’s also a good source of fiber and healthy fats.  Homemade granola is a wondeful topping, too.
  • Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds like almonds, pistachios, hemp seeds, and pumpkin seeds are great toppings for smoothie bowls because they add a satisfying crunch and a boost of healthy fats, protein, and fiber.
  • Coconut flakes: Coconut flakes add a nice texture and a subtle coconut flavor to smoothie bowls. They’re also a good source of healthy fats and fiber.  Shredded coconut works, too.
  • Honey: Honey is a natural sweetener that adds a touch of sweetness and a boost of antioxidants to smoothie bowls.
  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber, and also adds a nice texture to your smoothie bowl.  Flax seeds are another great option.
  • Make it sweeter: If you want a sweeter smoothie bowl, add a tablespoon honey, maple syrup or agave nectar.
  • Goji Berries: Goji berries are a good source of antioxidants and vitamins. They add a nice sweet and sour taste to your smoothie bowl.
  • Cacao nibs: Cacao nibs are a great topping for smoothie bowls because they add a rich chocolate flavor and are a good source of antioxidants and magnesium.
