Why Green Smoothies?

One of the best things about green smoothies is that they are incredibly easy to make. All you need is a blender and some fresh or frozen ingredients and you’re good to go. Green smoothies are also a great way to sneak in some extra greens into your diet. If you’re not a big fan of eating leafy greens, green smoothies are a great way to get the nutrients your body needs without having to eat them.

Do Green Smoothies Help You Lose Weight?

Another great thing about green smoothies is that they can help you lose weight. Green smoothies are packed with nutrients and fiber which can help keep you full and satisfied throughout the day. They’re also low in calories, making them a great choice if you’re trying to lose weight. In addition, green smoothies can help boost your metabolism and promote fat loss.

It’s important to note that just adding a green smoothie to an unhealthy eating plan will not help you lose weight, but if you incorporate green smoothies as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle they can help – especially if you replace a higher calorie or higher fat meal with one.

How to Make a Weight Loss Green Smoothie

Now that we’ve discussed some of the benefits of green smoothies, let’s get into how you can make one. This isn’t a recipe, per se (although we do have one below), but it is a general guide for experimenting and creating your own delicious healthy smoothies.

Start with a base

This can be water, almond milk, coconut milk, green tea, or any other liquid you like. Try for a low calorie, low fat base to help with weight loss, unless you are doing a keto diet or other similar diet where you would watch carbs vs. calories or fat.

Green tea is a great choice because it’s very low calorie and contains catechins, which are a type of antioxidant that have been shown to boost metabolism and promote fat loss.

Another great choice is coconut water, which is low calorie and contains electrolytes, which can help you stay hydrated.

If you like a creamier smoothie, feel free to use a low calorie plant based milk (I like Simply Almond unsweetened almond milk) or even skim milk.

Add leafy green vegetables

This is where you’ll get the majority of your nutrients from. Dark, leafy greens are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They’re also a great source of fiber, which can help keep you full and satisfied throughout the day.

Some of my favorite leafy greens to use in green smoothies are fresh spinach, kale, and Swiss chard. You can also experiment with other greens like collards, dandelion greens (great for detox smoothies), and arugula.

If you’re new to making green smoothies, start with a small amount of greens and gradually increase the amount you use over time. I also recommend starting with a spinach smoothie as your first green as it hides best in smoothies. From there you can gradually move on to a kale smoothie or other green smoothie recipe.

Add healthy fats

Healthy fats are an important part of any diet, but they’re especially important if you’re trying to lose weight. Healthy fats help keep you full and satisfied throughout the day, which can prevent you from overeating or snacking on unhealthy foods.

Some great choices for healthy fats include avocado, coconut oil, nut butter such as almond butter or peanut butter, and chia seeds. You can also add a scoop of protein powder or some Greek yogurt to your smoothie if you want an extra boost of protein.

Add fruits and sweeteners

Fruits are a great way to add sweetness and flavor to your green smoothies. They’re also a good source of dietary fiber as well as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

When choosing fruits, try to stick with lower sugar options like berries, apples, and citrus fruits for the majority of your fruit, but you can also add in a little pineapple, mango and banana, too. I really love a frozen banana in my smoothies.

You can use fresh fruit, but frozen fruit (frozen banana, frozen mango, etc) will give the best texture to your smoothie.

If you feel like your smoothie isn’t sweet enough you can also add a little bit of honey, maple syrup, monk fruit, steia or agave syrup to sweeten your smoothie if needed. A pitted date or two work well for a natural sweetener.

Finally, add some ice if desired and blend everything together until smooth. If you use frozen fruit ice shouldn’t be needed.

And that’s it! Now you have a delicious and nutritious green smoothie that can help you lose weight.

  • Make sure you’re drinking enough water. This is especially important if you’re trying to lose weight. Aim for 8-10 glasses of water per day.
  • Eat breakfast every day. This will help jumpstart your metabolism and keep you from snacking later in the day. Hint: A green smoothie with protein and healthy fat is a perfect breakfast option!
